The fort was once the seat of warrior general of Rajasthan. It later became the capital of Raja Madho Singh, who was a Diwan in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar. There are many stories related to the fort of Bhangarh. It is believed to be a centre of paranormal activity. People living in the area tell that there are a lot of noises coming from it at night. The Archaeological Survey of India’s office is also located outside the
limits of Bhangarh, a few kms from the fort. It is said that Bhangarh was cursed by a saint. Emperor Madho Singh built the city after attaining the approval of Guru Balu Nath, a saint who used to meditate there.

The saint gave his approval on the condition that the height of the fort should not be that high that its shadow falls on the place where the saint used to meditate. In case it did, the city would crumble into ruins. Once the construction was completed, saint’s place was unfortunately shadowed. Bhangarh immediately transformed into a cursed city and could never be rebuilt as no structures ever managed to survive it.Another Bhangarh fort story is about Princess Ratnavati. Her beauty was unparallel and it was known to people beyond kingdoms and borders. As she grew older many kings asked for her hand in marriage.

However, there was a magician who decided to use black magic to get her. He was lucky to see Princess Ratnavati’s mistress in the market and enchanted the perfume she was purchasing with black magic. He had hoped that the Princess would surrender herself to him as soon as she uses the perfume. However, his attempt failed as Princess got to know about his plans. She used perfume on a rock and rolled it on the magician and crushed him. Before dying he cursed the city of Bhangarh to death and as a result, it never witnessed any rebirths. It is believed that if anyone enters the fort after sunset he can never come out alive.
